Position and responsibilities

Stanford University’s Department of Music is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Composition in its tenure-track faculty. The planned start date is 1 September 2027. The position is based at Stanford University in California, USA.

Qualifications and teaching

Applicants need a DMA or PhD in composition or a closely related field, or equivalent professional distinction. Duties include undergraduate and graduate courses in composition and analysis, plus supervision of individual composition research. Candidates should also have expertise in another performance or research area, such as music theory, performance or computer music, and the ability or potential to mentor a diverse student body.

Deadline and pay

  • Application deadline: 1 October 2026 at 11:55 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), as listed in the official application portal.

  • The stated expected base pay range is US$115,133–135,388. The offer depends on qualifications, available funding and internal equity.
