New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Principal Harp Audition: Open to All Nationalities, 29 October Deadline
A professional principal harp post with a fully recorded first audition
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) is recruiting a Principal Harp. Musicians of all nationalities are invited to apply, subject to eligibility to work in New Zealand. The official deadline for all recorded audition materials is Thursday 29 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. New Zealand Daylight Time (NZDT). Applications are completed using the web form linked from the orchestra's jobs page, and the initial selection is based on recordings rather than a compulsory in-person audition.
This is an orchestral employment opportunity for a principal-level player, not an educational masterclass or a public competition in which all entrants pay to play. The NZSO seeks a musician capable of leading the harp section and performing to a high professional standard in a touring national orchestra. Applicants should assess travel readiness, work authorization and the contractual responsibilities involved in living and working in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Open to foreign musicians, but work authorization still matters
The NZSO explicitly states that applications are welcome from musicians of all nationalities. Its vacancy notice also says candidates must be eligible to work in New Zealand. These two statements should be read together: nationality itself is not a basis for automatic exclusion, but actual engagement remains conditional on lawful work arrangements. International applicants should ask the recruitment team what visa or work-right evidence is expected before assuming sponsorship or immigration costs will be provided.
Candidates should also consider whether professional experience and repertoire requirements align with their career stage. Being invited to send a recording does not mean the orchestra has committed to paying for relocation, private equipment transport or trial accommodation. Such terms must be negotiated in the formal employment process.
Application form, excerpts and recording package
Apply through the official NZSO online application form. After the form is received, the audition excerpt pack and Dropbox upload link for the recorded submission will be sent by email. The orchestra separately publishes a list of required repertoire and its recording requirements. Do not simply send an unsolicited YouTube recording or a résumé to a generic inbox if the official process requires the supplied excerpt pack and a specific upload route.
Prepare audio/video equipment and an instrument in advance, allowing enough time to record all prescribed orchestral excerpts, review sound quality and upload the files. The orchestra accepts only recordings conforming to the published requirements. Submissions received after 11:59 p.m. NZDT on 29 October 2026 are not part of this advertised round.
Selection, interview and potential trial period
The NZSO plans to email audition results by Friday 6 November 2026. Successful candidates may be invited to an online interview before a trial period with the orchestra is considered. There is no published promise that an initial recording leads straight to a permanent contract without further assessment. Full conditions and remuneration are available by enquiry to auditions@nzso.co.nz rather than as a universal salary figure on the vacancy page.
An applicant should prepare not only solo technique but also experience in ensemble leadership, collaboration with conductors, cueing and orchestral balance, adaptability between symphonic and contemporary repertoire, and the communication demands of a principal desk.
Organizer track record and official information
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is Aotearoa's national touring orchestra, with more than seventy-five years of documented activity and a programme of over one hundred annual performances, recordings and broadcasts.
