The Nicholas Tarling Aria Competition is welcoming applications for its 2027 edition, organised by the Nicholas Tarling Charitable Trust in association with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra in Auckland, New Zealand. Classical singers, including those based outside New Zealand, can take the first step through a video submission. The competition offers a rare chance to progress from recorded audition to live performance alongside an orchestra, but international entrants must budget for possible travel and check the complete conditions before applying.

Who can apply?

The competition offers three categories: Junior for singers aged 18 or younger, Emerging for those aged 19–35, and the Tarling Trophy for singers aged 36 and older. Ages are assessed against the organiser’s specified 15 November 2026 reference date. Singers should use the relevant category's precise eligibility and repertoire regulations rather than assuming that every category has the same music or prize requirements. The online entry stage is open internationally.

Deadline and audition format

The initial application period ends on 15 November 2026 at 11:59 p.m. New Zealand time. Applicants are asked to submit a YouTube performance video of roughly three to nine minutes, featuring an art song or opera aria with piano accompaniment; check exact video settings and supporting application materials on the official form. A live audition round is scheduled for 18 February 2027 in Manukau, with a final planned for 28 February 2027. The timeline may be updated by the organiser.

Prizes and performance opportunities

The organiser lists a total competition prize pool of approximately NZ$15,000. In the Emerging category, the advertised first prize is NZ$5,000 and second prize NZ$3,000. The final stage brings selected singers together for a performance opportunity with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra. Each category's awards and selection criteria must be checked separately; video selection is not a guarantee of a place in the final.
