Klein International String Competition 2027: Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass Applications
The 2027 Klein International String Competition has released advance application guidelines for promising young violin, viola, cello and double-bass players. Online entries are scheduled to open on 2 November 2026 and close on Friday 29 January 2027 at 8:59 p.m. Pacific Time (11:59 p.m. Eastern). At the time of publication, applications have not opened; musicians can prepare recordings and supporting documents in advance.
Age and instrument eligibility
Candidates must be aged 15–23 on 6 June 2027. The competition is open to violinists, violists, cellists and bassists. As the organiser explains, its prizes are intended for further instrumental study and performers already under professional management are not eligible. Applicants must follow the exact eligibility language on the current official application page rather than treating the age range alone as sufficient.
Fees and fee waiver route
A non-refundable application fee of US$145 is due with the entry, unless the performer qualifies for a fee waiver. The organiser offers a limited number of waivers for households with adjusted gross annual income of US$100,000 or less; applicants with special circumstances can review the instructions and apply early, since available waivers are limited and handled first come, first served. An applicant who needs a waiver must submit the fee-waiver materials by the same 29 January deadline.
What applicants should prepare
The official entry rules set out audition materials, video format, and required repertoire for each of the four strings. Musicians should prepare a programme that demonstrates musical imagination and technique without relying on an instrument category that is not listed. Check accompanying-pianist, audition and travel arrangements when an invitation is received and before making a financial commitment.
About the competition
The competition is an annual competition focused on emerging string soloists and is supported through a dedicated nonprofit programme and prizes for developing classical musicians. Its official application page publishes detailed requirements and waiver conditions, making it possible to compare eligibility before paying. Previous contestants and awardees are featured in the organisation's archive.
