A young string player's international competition

The Irving M. Klein International String Competition's 2027 edition is designed for violinists, violists, cellists and double bassists aged 15–23 on 6 June 2027. Applications are scheduled to open on 2 November 2026 and close on 29 January 2027 at 8:59 p.m. Pacific Time, equivalent to 11:59 p.m. US Eastern Time. On the date of this article, the application process has not opened. The competition is aimed at developing string musicians, and its regulations include restrictions relevant to musicians who already have fully professional management.

Audio-based selection and repertoire

The competition requests an audio recording comprising three contrasting repertoire selections, including an appropriate unaccompanied Bach excerpt and a movement from a concerto or comparable major solo work, subject to detailed instrument-specific rules. Applicants should check the latest recording-length, editing and file instructions rather than copying a set of pieces from a previous edition. Each candidate must make it straightforward for the jury to assess both solo technique and musical maturity.

Application fee and assistance

The listed non-refundable application fee is US$145. The organiser offers a limited number of financial-need waivers for eligible applicants, with a household-income threshold and evidence requirements described in its current guidelines. These waivers are not automatic or unlimited and may be allocated on a first-come basis. Prospective candidates who need assistance should contact the competition early, before the standard fee and application stages become urgent.

Competition record and participation

The Klein Competition in California has a documented history of young string competitors, past winners and juries, making it possible to assess the event through its official archive. The live stages give selected musicians a chance to perform and receive professional feedback. Before accepting an invitation, international entrants should confirm their travel, accompaniment, accommodation and any insurance or visa costs, since paying for entry does not itself guarantee an all-expenses-paid trip.
