Hummel International Piano Competition 2027: Bratislava, €6,000 Top Prize, June 30 Deadline
The Slovak Philharmonic has announced the 12th Johann Nepomuk Hummel International Piano Competition for 11–18 September 2027 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Pianists of every nationality who were born after 11 September 1997 may apply; the deadline for completed applications is 30 June 2027. The international jury will hear three live rounds at the Philharmonic, with the first prize worth €6,000 and three additional performances with the Slovak Philharmonic.
Eligibility and the signed application
The age rule is expressed as an exact birth-date boundary, not simply '30 and under': applicants must have been born later than 11 September 1997. They must submit a signed application with two suitable print-quality photographs and proof of payment of the €70 enrollment fee. Scanned signed documents may be emailed to hummelcompetition@filharmonia.sk, or sent by post to the competition secretariat at Medená 3, Bratislava. The candidate pays bank transfer charges in full, or the organizer may consider the application incomplete.
Three rounds and mandatory memory performance
Round 1 requires a Mozart sonata, a Hummel étude, a Chopin étude selected from the allowed Op. 10 or Op. 25 items, and a further étude by one of the prescribed composers. Its total limit is 25 minutes. Up to twelve pianists progress to Round 2, with a selected Beethoven sonata and a contrasting free programme lasting 50–60 minutes, without repeating earlier pieces. Three finalists perform Hummel's Septet in D minor, Op. 74, and a specified Mozart, Beethoven or Hummel concerto. Aside from the Hummel chamber work, the repertoire must be played from memory.
Prizes and live-streamed performances
The first prize of €6,000 includes three Slovak Philharmonic concert engagements; second prize is €4,000 and third prize €2,000. The jury may award additional special distinctions and may withhold some awards under the rules. Final results are due 18 September 2027, and performance rounds will be open to the public and live streamed. Entrants consent to noncommercial promotional use of performance recordings, a rights term worth reading in full.
Credible host and cost planning
The Slovak Philharmonic is the competition organizer, and the contest is linked to the World Federation of International Music Competitions and Alink-Argerich network. It celebrates Bratislava-born pianist-composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel, who studied with Mozart and bridged Classical and early Romantic styles. The secretariat can help request accommodation reservations, but that is not a promise of free lodging, so candidates should budget travel and hotel costs separately.
