Applications are open for the fifth Classic Winds International Competition, taking place at Vienna's MuTh Concert Hall in Austria from 26 April to 5 May 2027. Dedicated to flute, clarinet and saxophone, the event uses a video pre-selection before three live rounds, with the final performed with the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra. The official deadline is 15 January 2027.

Who can apply?

The competition welcomes applicants of all nationalities, provided they are no older than 35 on 26 April 2027, the opening date. Applicants register online, provide their planned programmes and submit video auditions. Candidates who pass the video screening are contacted by the organisers by 15 February 2027.

Fees, prizes and financial planning

  • €50 non-refundable fee for the video pre-selection stage.

  • A further €50 fee applies to candidates selected for the live competition in Vienna.

  • Travel, accommodation and any visa costs are borne by contestants; the organisers can provide accompanists on request.

  • The official prize fund totals €120,000. Each of the three instruments has first, second and third prizes of €20,000, €10,000 and €5,000 respectively. A €10,000 Grand Prix and €5,000 audience prize are also advertised.

Video audition and competition dates

The preliminary video programme is 12–15 minutes and must include at least one prescribed piece for the applicant's instrument. Recordings must be unedited, show hands, face and performer clearly, and be no more than six months old at the application deadline. The same repertoire cannot be repeated in the Vienna live rounds. Consult the instrument-specific video lists rather than assuming any piece is eligible.

  • 26–28 April 2027: first live round.

  • 30 April–2 May 2027: second round.

  • 3–5 May 2027: final round with orchestra.

Who is organising the competition?

Classic Winds has staged earlier international editions, including the 2023 competition in Dubai. The official 2027 programme names Hansjörg Schellenberger as artistic director and MuTh in Vienna as its venue. This established competition history and published rules allow applicants to verify details directly, including non-refundable payments.
