Alberta Youth Choir is looking for its 2027 singers

Choir Alberta has opened its 2027 Alberta Youth Choir (AYC) audition process for singers aged 16–22. The AYC is the provincial honour choir bringing together young vocalists from across Alberta, Canada, for intensive rehearsals, artistic development and a public performance. The deadline to apply for an audition is Monday, 2 November 2026, followed by online auditions held from 23 to 28 November 2026.

This is a performing and learning opportunity for singers, not an award that pays each applicant a cash prize. Participation involves several in-person commitments in Alberta early in 2027. The programme is particularly useful for young choristers who want to strengthen ensemble technique, read music in a demanding setting, and collaborate with singers beyond their regular school or community choir.

Who should apply: ages 16–22 and singers across Alberta

The official invitation addresses singers between 16 and 22 years of age and describes the AYC as a provincial ensemble for young people across Alberta. The application form asks for the applicant’s home city or municipality, voice part and choir history. Soprano, alto, tenor and bass parts are offered. The published form does not set out an exact age-calculation reference day, so someone close to a birthday threshold should confirm eligibility with Choir Alberta.

The programme is designed for Alberta’s singing community and requires attendance at an Edmonton rehearsal weekend and a Calgary residency. The official application page does not publish a detailed citizenship test or a postcode-based residency rule. Singers based outside Alberta should ask the organisers whether they qualify and whether the required travel can be arranged, rather than assume the opportunity is an unrestricted international choir placement.

Apply by 2 November, or use a conductor recommendation already submitted

Singers can apply by completing the official online Singer Application for Audition form by Monday, 2 November 2026. The form asks for name, email address, phone, birth date, voice part, city or municipality, the choirs in which the applicant currently sings, and previous choral experience. Applicants should enter accurate contact details because the next stage is organised by email.

There is an alternative route for singers who have already been included in a conductor or teacher recommendation. Choir Alberta states that a person whose conductor has sent an Intention to Audition form does not need to submit the separate singer application again: the audition packet will follow the teacher’s recommendation. Applicants should avoid making duplicate entries when the recommendation has already been registered.

The November audition will be held online via Zoom

After Choir Alberta receives the application or conductor recommendation, it will email an Audition Packet with instructions for booking an individual online audition. The audition period is 23–28 November 2026, with 28 November the last day to complete the assessment. A singer should not mistake the 2 November application deadline for the date when the actual singing takes place.

The audition is scheduled on Zoom. Participants should have a workable device, microphone or camera, and an environment quiet enough for the panel to hear their voice. These are practical preparations, not an announced requirement to buy professional recording equipment. The organiser will provide the exact audition procedure in its packet, and applicants should follow that document if technical instructions change.

Five components: vocal exercises, rhythm, prepared music and sight-learning

The official process comprises two basic vocal exercises, a rhythmic exercise, one prepared piece, one new short piece and a brief questionnaire. The prepared piece is chosen by the applicant and may be the singer’s own voice part in a piece their current choir performs. This allows choristers to demonstrate musicality using familiar ensemble repertoire instead of assuming that a solo opera aria is mandatory.

For the new piece, Choir Alberta supplies a PDF score. The assessment therefore combines existing preparation with the ability to respond to unfamiliar music. Prospective singers can use the weeks before the audition to practise rhythm, tuning and confident delivery, but the official site does not publish a fixed marking rubric, prescribed vocal range test or numerical pass threshold.

The programme fee is CAD 425 only after acceptance

Choir Alberta lists a chorister registration fee of CAD 425, payable once a singer has officially been accepted. This is not described as the fee for initially requesting an audition. Accepted members must complete registration and make the required programme payment by 1 January 2027. They should budget separately for any personal travel costs and ask the organiser whether accommodation or transport arrangements apply to their circumstances.

Financial assistance is available through bursaries. Choir Alberta advises singers who need support to contact programs@choiralberta.ca or telephone 780-488-7464. Availability of bursaries does not mean the participation fee is universally waived or that every application receives a full scholarship. Those needing assistance should ask about eligibility and the application process before the January payment deadline.

An intensive weekend in Edmonton and a February residency in Calgary

The 2027 programme includes a rehearsal weekend in Edmonton on 30–31 January, a residency in Calgary from 18–20 February and a showcase concert at Knox United Church on 21 February 2027. The 2027 AYC artistic overview identifies Chris Maunu as the guest conductor. These dates form a connected programme and are not independent concerts for which singers may freely choose one appearance.

The organiser explicitly requires accepted choristers to participate in all scheduled rehearsals and performances. School, university, family and travel arrangements should be checked before applying. Someone who can attend the audition but not the February residency may not be able to fulfil the offer. Exact rehearsal times and additional logistical details should be taken from the welcome materials issued after selection.

When the results arrive and how selection differs from the application

Choir Alberta expects to announce the official 2027 roster in early December 2026. Applications are not accepted automatically: the application creates an opportunity to audition, while the completed Zoom assessment informs the selection of choristers. A teacher recommendation also does not replace participation in the audition unless Choir Alberta separately confirms an exception.

This distinction matters financially as well as musically. Singers should wait for formal acceptance before treating themselves as members of the 2027 AYC and before applying the CAD 425 chorister fee to their budgets. The main value of the programme is choral training, collective work and stage experience; the organisers do not advertise a salary or prize money for selected singers.
