A community choir of fifty singers needs its next director

Cromwell Singers of Newbury, Berkshire, invites applications for a new Music Director to take up the role in April 2027. The present director, Trevor Defferd, is retiring after six years. The choir has been singing together for approximately fifty years and celebrated an anniversary concert in July 2026. Members value high-quality, enjoyable performances, stronger singing skills and fundraising for local charities.

The organisation has approximately fifty community singers, from formally trained performers to members with less experience. It seeks a skilled and motivating musical leader who understands the practical strengths of such a group. This is not a professional chorus audition for singers, nor a short fixed-price conducting commission; it is an ongoing artistic leadership responsibility.

Thirty-six Tuesday rehearsals and three concerts annually

Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings at Speen Village Hall in the Newbury area, with term-time activity running from September to July. The choir normally presents three major concerts: in early December, in late March or early April, and in early July. Performances use venues in and around Newbury and the programme ranges from musical theatre and folk to traditional English and classical music.

The estimated workload is around thirty-six rehearsals per year, plus preparation, performances and occasional additional tasks. Although a concert pianist may be engaged at performances, the current director also plays for the choir at rehearsals. That aspect is part of the fee assumptions, so applicants with strong piano skills should clarify what keyboard work is expected before discussing payment.

Rehearsal leadership, programming and committee work

The Director will plan and lead most rehearsals, conduct public performances and organise extra sessions if a section needs attention. Other duties can include making practice recordings of vocal lines at the piano, planning programmes with the committee, coordinating music with the librarian, identifying soloists and guest musicians, and occasionally attending committee meetings.

The choir emphasizes a supportive rehearsal experience as well as standards on stage. The suitable candidate will be comfortable communicating with amateur singers across a range of confidence and experience levels. Previous work with community choirs, knowledge of varied repertoire and reliable organisational habits should be described in the application, but exact formal eligibility remains governed by the advert and any further information provided by the secretary.

Self-employed contract and negotiated monthly remuneration

This is a paid self-employed freelance appointment, not a salaried employee role. Fees are to be agreed and normally paid monthly, based on the annual rehearsal and concert schedule and the associated work. The organisers say payment rates are reviewed annually in line with the Retail Prices Index. They have not published a fixed per-rehearsal rate or guaranteed annual earnings.

The successful Director will initially work through a three-month probationary first term, after which the agreement becomes a rolling contract subject to the stated notice provisions. Candidates should agree how preparation, cancelled sessions, guest instrumentalists and supplementary concerts affect the fee. Travel and time commitments around Newbury are relevant to the practical value of the engagement.

A detailed application is due Wednesday 21 October

Applications are requested by 21 October 2026, with the Making Music listing giving 5:00 p.m. UK local time. The choir asks for a covering letter, CV, two professional references and one or two choir references or testimonials, plus a vision of how the group could develop over the following three to five years. Informal questions can be sent to secretary Murrie Jackson or chair Jim Clark through the contact links in the original advertisement.

Interviews with shortlisted candidates are scheduled for the week of 2 November, followed by trial rehearsals on 10 or 17 November and a proposed offer on 23 November. The April 2027 start date should not be confused with the October 2026 application deadline. The group will provide further information and recordings of concerts to suitable applicants; check the posted vacancy for up-to-date contact details.
