The West of Scotland Schools Orchestra Trust (WSSO) has opened applications for its 2027 season. The advertised closing date is Saturday 31 October 2026. WSSO provides four main opportunities for school-age musicians in and around the west of Scotland: a senior Symphony Orchestra, a senior Concert Band, a Training Band and a String Orchestra. Each has different expected school years, standards and selection arrangements, so students should identify their appropriate group before submitting the form.

Training ensembles: around Grade 3 standard, no audition

The String Orchestra and Training Band are intended for young string, wind, brass and percussion musicians at around ABRSM Grade 3 or above, with school-year eligibility generally covering S1–S4, as described in the current WSSO application information. There is no standard audition for these training ensembles; WSSO tries to accommodate eligible applicants, subject to places and appropriate instrumentation. A reference from the instrumental teacher is required, however, and can be sent separately to info@wsso.org.uk.

Senior ensembles: around Grade 6 standard and a November audition

The senior Symphony Orchestra and Concert Band normally accept applicants in Scottish school years S2–S6, with an indicative playing standard of Grade 6+. Formal examination grades are not compulsory, so a student's teacher should assess whether their ensemble and technical experience is at the required level. Senior candidates are auditioned during November. The audition normally includes one short solo work of approximately three minutes and a simple sight-reading task. Percussionists should prepare material on tuned percussion and either snare drum or timpani. All auditions are unaccompanied.

Western Scotland educational links matter

WSSO is a regional charity working with local authorities and schools in the west of Scotland. It expects participants to support the music ensembles at their schools and local education authorities, and to continue regular instrumental lessons. Pupils at independent schools and outside the partner-authority catchment may have different fees. The organisation is not an internationally open competition for any young musician willing to pay the course charge: a connection to its educational and geographic network is central to the scheme.

Course fees for 2027 and what they cover

For the training ensembles, the published standard contribution is £320 for pupils at west-of-Scotland local-authority secondary schools and £420 for independent-school or out-of-catchment pupils. The senior ensembles cost £450 or £550 respectively. The training contribution covers a spring taster day, May sectionals and a four-day residential course with performance in Glasgow, while the senior contribution includes residential rehearsals and concerts and subsequent rehearsal and showcase activities. These amounts are participation costs, not auditions fees or cash prizes to students.

How to submit a complete application

The online form asks for the instrument, ensemble preference, school year, current institution, playing experience and parent or guardian information. Comments from the student's instrumental teacher must be included or sent by email. School leaders and parents are also asked to confirm permissions. Before completing the form, check availability for the trust's whole schedule, including its residential course, rehearsals and showcase concerts. The WSSO events page provides the relevant November audition calendar for senior ensembles.

Audition dates and regional logistics

The Trust has published auditions during November, including sessions at the University of Strathclyde and City Halls in Glasgow. Applicants receive their individual audition time and location after the closing date. There may be limited flexibility for rescheduling. For younger musicians travelling from elsewhere in the west of Scotland, families should coordinate school, instrumental lesson and transport arrangements rather than assume a remote-audition option is available.

Official application and contacts

Information checked 18 October 2026. A cached copy of WSSO's application page may show the older 2026 season; the current 2027 application lists 31 October 2026 as the closing date and the 2027 membership charges. Use the live form and individual audition communication for binding arrangements.
