Schubert Club is accepting applications for the 2027 Bruce P. Carlson Student Scholarship Competition, a long-running US classical-music award programme that distributes more than US$70,000 across divisions each year. The application and preliminary video submission deadline is 18 January 2027. The application fee is zero, but this is not a worldwide unrestricted call: the organizer imposes a specific five-state residency or school-enrolment requirement.

Eligibility: five-state region

Applicants must either reside or be enrolled at a learning institution in Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota or Iowa. Both high-school and college/graduate performers compete in their relevant age and study divisions. A musician elsewhere in the United States or overseas should not apply without first establishing that they meet this stated requirement.

Prizes and performance fields

Individual college/graduate division prizes are listed as US$2,500 first, US$1,750 second and US$500 third; junior and senior high-school division prizes are US$2,000, US$1,500 and US$500. The more than US$70,000 figure is the programme-wide total, not one person's prize. Divisions include piano, strings, brass and woodwinds, guitar and voice, each with its own repertoire rules.

2027 auditions and timing

Preliminary assessment is online using a performance video due 18 January 2027. The 2027 rule gives brass/woodwind, guitar, piano and string contestants a total of 15 minutes for two works; voice retains a 10-minute allowance. Finalists are notified in early March and the in-person finals take place 20–21 March 2027 at Macalester College, St Paul, Minnesota. The winners' recital is planned for 11 April at Ordway Concert Hall.

Established organizer and practical preparation

Schubert Club dates its scholarship competition to 1922 and has run educational and concert programmes for generations of musicians. Applicants should read the instrument-specific division PDF before recording, verify the two-work repertoire, confirm regional documentation and allow time for the application review stage before video upload.
