Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP), working with Portland Piano International (PPI), has opened the 2027 Piano Concerto Competition for young pianists in the Portland metropolitan region. The closing date is Sunday, November 22, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Applications must include a $35 fee and a live, unedited audio performance of a movement from the chosen concerto. This is a regional opportunity, not a nationwide or international competition open to any pianist who can travel to Oregon.

Eligibility: the 75-mile Portland radius and school-year rule

Applicants must live within a 75-mile radius of Portland, Oregon, and must be high-school seniors or younger during the 2027–2028 academic year. The organizer states that all pianists meeting these conditions may enter; membership of PYP is not described as a prerequisite for submitting the concerto competition application. Families should confirm both the residential radius and the school-grade requirement before paying an entry fee. A pianist who will already have graduated before the relevant academic year should not assume eligibility merely because they are still under 18.

Select a concerto that PYP can actually perform

The entry asks pianists to choose a concerto or a concert work with orchestral accompaniment. The orchestral parts must be available for the Philharmonic to rent or purchase. The organizer asks entrants to make advance contact about an unusual work, a concerto longer than 35 minutes, or a piece with extraordinary orchestration. Choosing a compelling movement is important, but so is choosing music that a youth orchestra can realistically stage in the following season. Applicants should discuss the score and performance length with a teacher before submitting.

The preliminary recording must be audio, not video

The initial submission consists of a live, unedited, unaccompanied recording of one movement from the selected work. Video files are explicitly excluded. After the online application is submitted, the system supplies the Dropbox link needed to upload the audio. The $35 application fee and recording must both be received by the November 22 deadline; completing only the web form is not enough. Check the final file in full before uploading, and do not make edits between separate takes.

Final round on February 5, 2027

Finalists are to be informed by December 21, 2026. They will perform the selected concerto movement from memory at Lincoln Recital Hall, Room 75, Portland State University on Friday, February 5, 2027. Unlike the preliminary audio round, this live final requires a piano accompanist playing the orchestral reduction. Each finalist must arrange and pay for their own accompanist; PYP can suggest accompanists if asked. Preparing the accompaniment part and adequate rehearsal time is therefore an important part of the competition budget.

Prizes include orchestral concerto engagements

The winner receives a $1,000 scholarship, a professional photo session before the performance, and an engagement to perform the entire concerto with PYP at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall during the 2027–2028 season. The runner-up receives a $500 scholarship and a performance of a mutually agreed short work for piano and orchestra with PYP or Camerata PYP in the same season. The winner must also be available for the agreed rehearsal period; selecting the concerto well in advance can help with that commitment.

How to prepare a strong and eligible entry

Students should verify their residence and 2027–2028 grade, choose a published concerto with obtainable orchestral materials, record one complete movement live in a single unedited take, and ensure the fee and Dropbox upload are complete. Those who reach the final need to memorize the movement and arrange an accompanist. This competition rewards an eventual ensemble performance, so interpretation, rhythmic flexibility and communication with an orchestra matter beyond purely solo virtuosity.

Official rules and submission form

Information checked on October 18, 2026. The organizers’ current application form and official competition page govern all deadlines, formats and eligibility decisions.
