Portland Piano International and Portland Youth Philharmonic invite young pianists to their 2027 Piano Concerto Competition. This is a regional opportunity, not an unrestricted international competition. Applicants must live within 75 miles of Portland, Oregon, and be no older than a high-school senior during the 2027–28 season. The online form closes November 22, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, and the entry fee is US$35.

Geographic and school-year eligibility

The Portland-area residency limit is central to eligibility. Pianists who live outside the 75-mile radius should not apply without receiving clarification from the organisers, even if they have an outstanding recording. The educational restriction refers to school status during the 2027–28 orchestra season, not just the performer's age on the November application date. Families should read the full eligibility statement before payment.

Submit audio, not a video

The preliminary submission must be an unedited and unaccompanied AUDIO recording of the concerto movement the pianist wishes to perform. This is a specific requirement: a polished concert video, an edited recording or a recording with orchestra or piano accompaniment is not an automatic substitute. Prepare the piece, composer and movement information carefully. The organisers use the submission to shortlist performers for a live final round.

Finals and winner's orchestral performance

Finalists are expected to perform on February 5, 2027, at Portland State University, accompanied by an accompanist they arrange and pay for themselves. The winner receives the opportunity to perform a selected concerto movement with Portland Youth Philharmonic during its 2027–28 season, and the organisers mention an additional short solo performance opportunity. Finalists should confirm the actual piano, rehearsal and performance arrangements with the competition team.

Budget and preparation

The published application fee is US$35. For anyone progressing to the live final, pianist-accompanist costs and travel to Portland may be additional expenses. This is a performance-development competition rather than a guaranteed cash-prize programme. Choose a concerto movement that fits both the rules and your ability to perform confidently with an ensemble if selected.

Who runs the event?

Portland Youth Philharmonic is an established American youth-orchestra organisation and Portland Piano International is a Portland-based presenter of piano performance. Their joint competition is administered through a dedicated application form hosted by the orchestra. The combination provides a credible route from individual piano study to an orchestral stage, subject to selection. Reviewed October 25, 2026.
