International opportunity

The fifth OST Challenge, an international film-music composition competition in France, invites composers around the world to score film scenes or a screenplay. Its final takes place on February 4, 2027 at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, where the twelve finalists' music will be performed by the 21-player string section of the Orchestre National Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Eligibility

Entry is open to all nationalities, ages, experience levels and musical styles. Work must be personally and individually composed, without musical borrowing. Entrants who have previously won two OST Challenge prizes are ineligible. The four tracks are live-action fiction film, animation, experimental film and original music written in response to a screenplay.

Artistic and technical requirements

Applicants compose for a specified 21-player string orchestra: six first violins, five second violins, four violas, four cellos and two double basses. No additional instruments are permitted. The screenplay track has an approximately five-minute total limit. Candidates provide a stereo, 48 kHz audio demo precisely synchronized to the supplied film material, plus a PDF full score displaying synchronized timecode.

Deadlines and submission

There are two distinct deadlines in Paris time: registration and payment must be completed by November 19, 2026 at 10 p.m.; the finished audio demo and PDF score must be uploaded by November 26 at 11:59 p.m. The account on the submission platform must use the same email address as the fee payment. The system anonymizes files, but identifying names, signature vocals or comments must not appear within the submitted material.

Fees, funding and key conditions

Fees are €75 for one category, €100 for two, €150 for three or €200 for all four, and are non-refundable. Each of the four category prizes and the Orchestra Prize has a €2,500 value; notably, the Screenplay Prize is apportioned between an €800 composer commission and €1,700 in film-score production. Accommodation is provided for the twelve finalists, but travel and most meals are self-funded. The French rules alone are legally authoritative.
