New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Conducting Fellowship 2027: NZ Residence Rule, 1 November Deadline
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) is accepting applications for its 2027 Conducting Fellowship until 1 November 2026 at 5 p.m. New Zealand local time. The year-long development programme provides mentored podium experience with the national orchestra through three modules in February, July and October 2027. It offers eight places at Fellow or Associate Fellow level, plus a variable number of intern opportunities. Crucially, the official eligibility list requires candidates to be New Zealand residents, citizens, students (including exchange students) or visa holders. It is NOT an unrestricted worldwide contest; visiting foreign applicants without one of those statuses should clarify their eligibility before sending documents.
What does the fellowship offer?
The programme is guided by NZSO Principal Conductor in Residence Hamish McKeich, with support from Music Director Emeritus James Judd, and provides working experience with NZSO musicians, professional conductors and teachers. Three levels—Fellow, Associate Fellow, Intern—allow different degrees of exposure and development. The NZSO explicitly states that it covers transport and accommodation costs associated with the programme for selected fellows. This is programme travel support, not a cash prize or a guaranteed salary.

Fees, travel and immigration cautions
The official opportunity page does not announce an entry charge, salary or fixed cash bursary. It explicitly covers approved transport and accommodation for selected participants; do not equate that with a paid staff conductor appointment. Non-New Zealand nationals must have valid entry, residence, study or work conditions appropriate to their situation. A foreign musician who intends to apply while travelling as a tourist should ask the NZSO whether that visa counts in the eligibility rule. Convert the 5 p.m. New Zealand deadline correctly from your own timezone.
Established national organiser
The NZSO is New Zealand's national symphony orchestra, publicly performing subscription concerts and national tours. Its conducting fellowship is supported by The Tindall Foundation's Mary Fitzwilliam Award and Creative New Zealand. The programme publishes previous conductors' experiences and named artistic mentors, allowing aspiring conductors to verify the opportunity with the orchestra directly.
