Musiktheater Bavaria Pianist Fellowships 2027: Four Tuition-Free Accompanist Places
Musiktheater Bavaria will offer FOUR tuition-free Collaborative Piano Fellowships for its summer programme in Oberaudorf, Germany, from 9 to 30 July 2027. Applications open on 15 November 2026 and close on 10 February 2027. The audition and application themselves carry no charge. Selected accompanists work with singers, vocal coaches and music-theatre faculty while studying German diction, opera recitative and orchestral or pit-band reductions. The organiser expressly says the pianist fellows receive $0 tuition: do not confuse this with the regular singer studios' US$6,400 tuition.
Who qualifies for a pianist fellowship?
Collaborative pianists aged 32 or younger.
Opera piano applicants must have completed a master's degree by the end of spring semester 2027.
Musical Theater piano applicants must have completed at least a bachelor's degree by spring 2027.
Applicants from all countries may audition with recent video submissions; English is used for programme communications and German language is studied during the course.
Only four tuition-free places are offered in the summer; selection is competitive.
Audition materials and calendar
Upload recent video links showing you accompanying a singer in THREE contrasting selections, drawn from opera, operetta, musical theatre and/or German Lieder. Each recording should allow the pianist's work to be evaluated, including ability to breathe with the singer, lead recitative and balance solo lines. Include your current performance résumé and photograph. The audition rules request recordings from the past six months; check the full 2027 requirements when the online form opens. The fellowships have no rolling early acceptance before mid-February, so there is no reason to pay an intermediary to reserve a pianist place.
Programme and included benefits
During the three-week summer residency, pianists play for individual lessons and staged activities, receive weekly specialist collaborative piano classes, study German language and lyric diction, and are offered weekly private piano lessons. Public concerts and masterclasses may include the fellows subject to faculty approval. The fellowship covers the $6,400 tuition normally charged to singer participants; the pianist page also describes included programme lodging, meals and local transport according to its detailed costs page. International flights and any extra personal expenses are not automatically included.
Not a salary or cash prize
A tuition waiver means the successful pianist does not owe the programme's standard course fee. The website does not promise a cash salary, guaranteed paid employment after graduation or automatic reimbursement of transatlantic airfare. Some housing and meals are included, but the official housing and cost sections determine the exact coverage. Applicants should budget passport, insurance, visa and any extra hotel nights. Scholarship funds for singers are different from these pianist fellowships.
Organiser and past operations
Musiktheater Bavaria is a nonprofit-oriented summer performance training programme with long-running opera and musical-theatre studios in the Bavarian Alps. It pairs US and international music professionals with young singers and pianists, runs public performances and publishes accounts by previous accompanist fellows. The 2027 official pages make the pianist admission and tuition arrangements distinct from the two paid singer studios.
