Alongside instrumental auditions, Carnegie Hall is inviting applications for three distinct educational apprenticeships with the 2027 National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA). These are training placements within a summer national youth ensemble, not advertised permanent employment.

The three available roles

The Orchestra Library Apprentice works with the principal orchestra librarian on scores, parts, editions and materials for rehearsals and tour performances. The Orchestra Management Apprentice helps with rehearsal schedules, player organisation, seating assignments, concert logistics and tour planning. Apprentice Composers work on orchestration and new works that are rehearsed and recorded during the residency. Composition mentor Sean Shepherd wrote Magiya for NYO-USA's inaugural season in 2013.

Who may apply

Applicants must meet NYO-USA's national youth eligibility: US citizenship or permanent residence, enrolment in high school or equivalent during 2026–27, and ages 16–19 on 1 July 2027. The official posting specifies practical experience or musical skills relevant to the selected role. For example, library candidates should be able to read full orchestral scores; management candidates should be comfortable in ensemble environments.

Deadlines, programme support and submission

The application deadline is 3 December 2026, with reference submissions due 17 December. Applicants use the Acceptd application linked by Carnegie Hall and provide role-specific material, a personal essay and video response; applicants for composer roles should consult the composition portfolio instructions on the official page. The planned programme period is early July through early August 2027.

Carnegie Hall describes these apprenticeships as tuition- and expense-free apart from the student journey to and from the programme, for which financial assistance may be available where there is substantial need. The official page should be used to confirm the precise travel location and the current financial and application conditions.

About the organizer and application verification

Carnegie Hall operates concert and music-education programmes in New York and has offered NYO-USA apprenticeships since 2014. Its 2027 page outlines each pathway, the expected duties and the authorised Acceptd application link; submissions are not requested through an unrelated private recruitment agency.
