Manchester Midday Music has launched a Chamber Ensemble Prize for its 2026–27 season. The new UK-focused competition offers emerging chamber groups the chance to perform at a public final in Manchester and potentially earn a major recital opportunity at The Bridgewater Hall. There is no fee to enter. This competition is for ensembles rather than solo performers and is especially relevant to instrumental groups and small vocal ensembles working largely in the Western classical tradition.

Who can enter: UK location, ages, and ensemble formation

Applicants must be UK residents or students based in the UK. The members of the ensemble should be 18 to 30 years old on the date of the live final, 4 January 2027. Each competing ensemble must consist of three to six players or singers, with no conductor. Eligible formations include strings, period instruments, piano-containing combinations and vocal groups. The organisers allow flexible instrumentation, but the submitted repertoire should be predominantly Western classical music. Applicants residing overseas who are not UK-based students should not assume they are eligible.

Deadlines, first-round video and live final

The video submission deadline is Monday 16 November 2026 at 5:00 pm UK local time. Groups submit a 12–15 minute performance video with their permanent membership; substitute performers or deputies are not allowed. The video needs a short spoken introduction by at least one ensemble member about the group and programme. Recordings must have been made within six months of the deadline, be visually and aurally clear, and capture an uninterrupted live take; individual takes for different works may be submitted. Applicants also supply two sample programme ideas for 50-minute recitals.

The artistic consultant will select ensembles from the first round for a live public final at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester on Monday 4 January 2027. Finalists will each present their own-choice programme lasting up to 25 minutes, allowing for introductions and audience applause. Confirm any rehearsal, pianist, music-stand or equipment needs directly with the organiser when invited.

First prize and further opportunities

First prize: £2,000, a recital in Manchester Midday Music's 2027–28 series at The Bridgewater Hall, assistance in obtaining additional UK recitals, and a newly commissioned work through the organiser's Composition Prize to be performed at the series recital. The second-prize ensemble is offered a recital in the 2027–28 Bridgewater Hall series. A public Audience Award is also planned, voted on by Manchester Midday Music's Friends and the audience at the final. The organiser's page does not state a separate cash payment for the audience award.

Organizer background and judging credibility

Manchester Midday Music has presented lunchtime classical concerts and chamber performances in Manchester for generations; the organisation traces its roots to 1915. The competition is part of its regular performance and commissioning activity rather than a standalone untraceable online award. Named judges include artistic consultant Jo Sweet, who is also linked with University of Birmingham Music and Barber Concerts, and trustees Karen Humphreys and Davis Jones with Royal Northern College of Music backgrounds. These published affiliations help prospective entrants understand the selection panel, but do not predict the outcome.

Practical application checklist

Before uploading, check all members' ages as of 4 January 2027 and document their UK residence or UK student status. Decide on balanced repertoire, make a recent 12–15 minute video using the permanent lineup, include a concise spoken introduction, prepare two fifty-minute programme proposals and ensure that file or video links remain viewable to assessors. Review the official competition criteria and submit using the Apply Here button on Manchester Midday Music's own page before 5 pm UK time on 16 November. For ensemble disputes about mixed student/residence status, seek written clarification in advance.

This independently written guide is based on the organiser's published competition page as checked on 19 October 2026. Rules, awards and competition timings may be updated by the organiser; its current official text takes precedence. It does not represent a guarantee of acceptance or third-party human review.
