Major support for festivals and community events in the North East

The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority is inviting expressions of interest for its Mayor's Events Fund, supporting signature and grassroots events scheduled between April 2027 and March 2029. The official deadline for this intake is Thursday 26 November 2026. Potential requests range from £10,000 to £500,000, subject to appraisal and approval. This is an event-development fund, not a prize open directly to all musicians regardless of where they live.

The three-year public fund launched in March 2026 with an overall envelope of £11 million. More than £6 million is described as available for 2027–29 activity. The Authority wants proposals that celebrate North East England's identity, create opportunities for local creative businesses, draw visitors, improve cultural participation and leave a longer-lasting community benefit.

What kinds of music projects are worth considering?

Eligible-looking proposals might include a regional jazz or folk festival seeking to develop audiences, a series of contemporary live music events with community partners, an established multi-arts festival proposing an ambitious expansion, or a new cultural event with a credible production structure. The fund also supports cultural activity outside music, including local creative festivals and community-led programming.

The organiser describes support for established events, new signature events, community events and regional talent platforms. Simply sending an individual band biography or asking for a recording advance is not the same as applying to produce an event that serves the wider regional audience.

How the application works: EOI first, detailed business case later

The current round begins with an Expression of Interest (EOI) form and separate Eligibility and Assessment Criteria document. Applicants should review both from the official authority page and send the required EOI to eventsfund@northeast-ca.gov.uk by 26 November 2026. Shortlisted applicants may subsequently be invited to develop a complete business case. An EOI is therefore the initial selection stage, not confirmation that an award has been secured.

Prepare a concise concept outlining the host area, target audiences, projected attendance, local performing artists and suppliers, accessibility plan, governance, delivery partners, programme dates and a credible budget with other prospective contributions. Any claims about guaranteed headliners, venue availability or sponsor income should be supported by evidence rather than assumptions.

Funding size and budget risk

The funding request range of £10,000–£500,000 is not a single grant award paid automatically to every submitting applicant. The official page gives a range and invites EOI submissions, but individual terms such as required match funding, permitted overheads, restrictions and eligible geographic areas need to be checked in the downloadable assessment rules and any later funding agreement.

Festival producers should distinguish a public grant from ticket-sale income, artist fees, staffing, safety, venue hire, technical production, insurance, marketing and additional funding sources. The proposal needs to explain lasting benefit for North East communities, not only short-term commercial revenue.

Who is behind the fund? Evidence of public activity

The administrator is the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, with official contact details and decision-making documentation on its government website. Its fund information publicly references supported or assessed regional events including BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend, Mouth of the Tyne Festival, Newcastle Pride, NOVUM Summer Festival, North Shields 801 and Sunderland Stages: BLENDS.

These examples demonstrate that the authority's events programme covers both high-profile and locally rooted activity. They are not a guarantee that a newly submitted project will receive support. Applicants should use the published eligibility document to establish that their organisation and proposed event area meet the programme's precise regional rules.
