Writers and composers developing a new stage musical can submit their work to the 2027 New Musical Project in Boulder, Colorado. The programme accepts entries from anywhere and is free to enter by November 1, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time. Applications received from November 2 through December 1 require a US$30 late submission fee. Applicants based in Colorado receive consideration for at least one of the available places.

What winning projects receive

Up to three winning musicals will receive the opportunity for a semi-staged presentation of a 30-minute excerpt during the Boulder programme in late July or early August 2027. In addition, six to ten finalists are expected to receive a US$100 award and a place in the associated cabaret programme. The selected teams are due to provide their 30-minute versions by April 1, 2027.

Materials required from musical creators

Prepare a synopsis of about 100 words, a cast breakdown, a libretto excerpt of at least 30 pages and at least three audio demos. The application form also requests an accessible Google Drive or Dropbox link containing the materials, including vocal ranges, cast information and an additional synopsis. Entries with restricted, broken or missing files will not be reviewed. Test all sharing settings on an account outside your own before applying.

Key dates after submission

Free deadline: November 1, 2026. Paid final deadline: December 1, 2026. Interview requests to finalists: December 18, 2026. Expected winners and finalists announcement: February 1, 2027. Thirty-minute cuts from winning teams: April 1, 2027. Public programme: late July to early August 2027 in Boulder, Colorado. Travel or lodging support is not specified by the public form, so applicants should budget conservatively.

Eligibility and artistic focus

The project welcomes creative teams regardless of home region, and expressly encourages diverse stories and artists. It values intergenerational approaches and narratives from traditionally underrepresented communities. Its intent is development of original musical theatre, not auditions for performers on a pre-existing production.

Organiser and application

The official form links to the New Musical Project and Parlando, giving applicants identifiable cultural organisations behind the call. Review the complete form and project details, select the appropriate deadline, and confirm that your team owns all necessary rights to its submitted songs and script. Verified October 25, 2026.
