Opportunity and eligibility
The seventh Lowell Chamber Orchestra international call for scores is open to composers of any nationality and age. The Massachusetts ensemble invites orchestral music in diverse genres and encourages, without requiring, musical reflection on social justice. The winning work is programmed in the orchestra's 2027–28 season and professionally video-recorded. Previous performances of the submitted work are allowed, so it is not restricted to world-premiere scores.
Instrumentation and materials
The principal requirement is an 8–20-minute piece for 8–26 players drawn solely from the published instrumentation list. The available forces include strings up to 6.5.4.4.2, pairs of major woodwinds and trumpets, horns, trombones, tuba, up to two percussionists, harp and one keyboardist. Solo concertos, choirs, staged opera and ballet are excluded. Multimedia or electronics may be considered, but discuss technology needs with admin@lowellchamberorchestra.org before submitting. Provide an anonymous PDF score with any relevant performance notes. Audio examples are not requested, except where pre-recorded electronics are essential.
Dates, costs, prizes and conditions
The deadline is January 3, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. UTC−5; the non-waivable submission fee is US$40. The prize includes $1,200 cash, a filmed performance and up to $300 of documented travel stipend. A winner is expected to be named by March 21, 2027. For applicants under 18 the form must be completed by a parent or guardian. The site's FAQ discusses multi-movement works using a different upper duration figure from the headline rule; rely on the stated 8–20 minutes and clarify any borderline score with the organiser.
