Manchester Midday Music Composition Prize 2027: £1,000 for UK-Based Composers (Advance Notice)
ADVANCE NOTICE — UK-BASED COMPOSERS ONLY. Manchester Midday Music has announced a new judged Composition Prize for 2027. The award will offer £1,000 in cash and a professional live recording to a winning composer. This opportunity is separate from the organiser's Chamber Ensemble Prize: the ensemble competition selects the musicians, while the Composition Prize will later select a new score written specifically for those musicians. The composition entry period has NOT started as of 30 October 2026.
When do applications open? February 2027
The organiser states that the Composition Prize will be launched in February 2027, after the winning ensemble and required instrumentation have been confirmed. The published entry deadline is 12 July 2027. Composers cannot yet prepare a fully compliant final score because the instruments — likely a chamber group from three to six players, possibly including singers — have not been announced. Check the official site again at launch rather than submitting prematurely.
Strict UK connection and early-career eligibility
The published criteria say the competition is open to UK residents and UK-based students who are currently at postgraduate level or have graduated within the previous three years. This is a UK-connected national competition, not a globally unrestricted call. The organiser's sentence should be read in full because postgraduate and graduation-date eligibility may also be applied to resident composers. If your status is ambiguous, ask the organiser for written confirmation before paying any fees or starting work.
Composition brief and prohibited techniques
Write a six- to eight-minute chamber composition for the instrumentation of the eventual Chamber Ensemble Prize winner. The work must be performable without a conductor. The organiser expressly excludes extended instrumental techniques, prepared piano, electronics and instrumental doubling. If the ensemble contains singers, composers must have lawful permission to use any selected text. Submission materials will require a formatted full score, individual parts and a programme note no longer than 150 words.
£1,000 cash award, workshop, concert and recording
The winning composer will receive a £1,000 cash prize and a professional recording of the world-premiere performance during Manchester Midday Music's 2027/28 season at The Bridgewater Hall. Four shortlisted works will receive a workshop with the selected chamber ensemble, led by composer Ryan Latimer, with feedback for participants. A composition specialist employed as a professor or lecturer at a UK university or conservatoire, with the organiser's artistic consultant, will judge the scores. The cash award is a competition prize, not salary to every entrant.
Organizer track record and differences from the ensemble contest
Manchester Midday Music is a long-running recital organiser in Manchester. Its Chamber Ensemble Prize is a distinct 2026/27 contest for performing groups; the Composition Prize is the NEW 2027 programme commissioning a work for whichever group wins. Existing articles about the Chamber Ensemble Prize should not be mistaken for the same competition. The competition's adjudication, musical brief, prize amount and programme have already been described officially, but its exact launch and submission instructions may be updated.
Fees and application method are not yet confirmed
The official 2027 advance notice does not clearly state an application charge or full submission-portal procedure. Do not assume the competition is free, open now or accepting email scores today. Before applying, verify the announced instrumentation, any fee, any copyright or publishing obligations and the final launch rules. The July deadline is currently the published target and may be revised before launch.
