Edinburgh Youth Orchestra (EYO) is opening a new Training Orchestra pathway for 2027, aimed at younger primary-school musicians taking their first steps in ensemble playing. Children in Scottish primary years P3–P7 who play an orchestral string, woodwind, brass or percussion instrument at approximately Grade 1–3 standard may apply. There is no audition. Families choose one of two identical two-day courses, either 3–4 April 2027 or 2–3 July 2027, held at St George’s School in Edinburgh.

Two dates and two different application deadlines

For the April course, the application deadline is 31 January 2027. For the July course, the deadline is 1 May 2027. Each two-day course runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The content is the same, so families should choose only one course rather than submit two applications in the hope of doubling attendance. The organiser warns that instrument places can fill and that waiting lists may be used when a section is oversubscribed. Submitting early matters even though there is no individual playing audition.

Who should apply and what standard is expected?

The target group is P3–P7 pupils, with the organiser suggesting P4–P7 for wind and brass instruments. A graded exam certificate is not compulsory; roughly Grade 1–3 proficiency is only a guide. The programme includes children studying drum kit who want to learn orchestral percussion. It also specifically invites pianists interested in percussion to contact EYO before applying, rather than automatically placing all keyboard players in the standard orchestra application route.

Musical activities: wind band, string orchestra and a sharing concert

The course brings children together in instrument-appropriate groups to experience rehearsing and making music with peers. Participants can expect a wind band or string orchestra, guidance from professional tutors and an informal celebratory concert for family and friends. The educational value is not measured by a solo competition ranking. Learning when to start and stop, listening across a group and enjoying a first ensemble experience are central to the design.

Fees, deposits and bursaries

The standard fee for either two-day course is £120, with a non-refundable £40 deposit to confirm an offered place and the £80 balance due by the end of February for the April session or the end of May for the July session. Where siblings attend, the second and later children receive a reduced fee of £100. The charity offers bursary support up to 100% for eligible families who have been offered a place; financial difficulties should be discussed with EYO rather than treated as a reason not to apply.

Practical arrangements and suitability

This is a non-residential course, not an overnight youth-orchestra camp. Families are responsible for arriving at St George’s School in time with the child's instrument and needed accessories. As the course involves young children, confirm drop-off, collection, supervision and any instrument-specific requirements in the acceptance message. The 2027 Training Orchestra is different from EYO's intermediate Ensembles Course for ages 10–18 and its advanced auditioned Symphony Orchestra for ages 13–21.

Online application

The official webpage provides separate application links for the April and July courses. Before submitting, check that the correct course date is selected and that the young musician's school year and instrumental level are given accurately. If a section is already full, the organiser may offer a waiting-list place; an application alone does not guarantee immediate acceptance.

Official entry

Information verified 18 October 2026. The organisers' 2027 application, acceptance letter and bursary process govern final details.
