Edinburgh Youth Orchestra (EYO) is accepting applications for its 2027 Symphony Orchestra programme, a non-residential course for advanced young orchestral instrumentalists with a connection to Scotland. The current closing date is Friday 30 October 2026. Successful applicants will prepare and perform major repertoire under conductor José Salazar alongside cellist Laura van der Heijden. The 2027 season involves a preparatory rehearsal in March and an eight-day summer course from 31 July to 7 August, culminating in public concerts in Stirling and Edinburgh.

Eligibility: advanced players aged about 13–21 with a Scottish connection

EYO welcomes young musicians around ages 13–21 who play orchestral strings, woodwind, brass or percussion at beyond Grade 7 level. Formal graded exam certificates are not required if the player is at the equivalent standard. An important regional condition is that applicants should have been born in Scotland, be living or studying there, or have family connections to Scotland. This is not presented as an unrestricted worldwide youth-orchestra scheme. Because of the particular 2027 repertoire, there will be no auditions for harp or piano this year.

Application and two audition routes

Apply online by 30 October 2026. Applicants receive confirmation and a further form to choose either in-person or video audition. In-person auditions are scheduled for 5 December at St George’s School and 6 December at St Mary’s Music School; video entries close on Wednesday 2 December. Prepared orchestra excerpts are expected to be sent after the application deadline, with instructions in early November. Candidates should verify their preferred audition format as soon as the confirmation arrives, rather than delaying the audition booking until the end of November.

The 2027 music programme

The announced repertoire includes Panayiotis Markéas's Freedom, She Yells, Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor with Laura van der Heijden and Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2. The week offers a demanding combination of large-scale symphonic repertoire and soloist collaboration. Rehearsals are based at St George’s School, Edinburgh. Concerts are planned for the Albert Halls, Stirling, on 5 August, and Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh, on 6 and 7 August as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe; dates and repertoire may be adjusted by EYO.

Course fee and bursaries: £440 is not the audition charge

The current 2027 course fee is £440. A successful applicant normally pays a non-refundable £100 deposit to confirm the place, with the remaining £340 due by 1 May 2027; instalment plans are possible. The second and subsequent siblings pay a reduced course fee of £380. EYO also offers bursary support of up to 100%, including help with transport costs, for accepted participants who need assistance. The course itself is non-residential, so families should consider their travel to daily rehearsals and concerts.

What happens after selection?

The preparatory day is 7 March 2027; the summer course is 31 July–7 August. The organisers expect audition outcomes during the week beginning 14 December 2026. If offered a place, the participant completes the acceptance form and either pays the deposit or seeks bursary support. Applicants should keep the full rehearsal week free; the value of an orchestra course comes from consistent rehearsals as a section, not just appearing at the concerts.

Checking the 2027 page rather than an archived 2026 version

Search engines and web caches may sometimes show EYO's previous 2026 Symphony Orchestra season at the same URL, including an obsolete £395 course fee and 2025 application deadline. The current official 2027 listing instead gives 30 October 2026 as the application date and £440 as the 2027 course fee. Applicants should confirm that the online form clearly says '2027' before sending information or payment.

Official application
