Composing in the Wilderness 2027: Alaska Chamber Music Residency, Apply by November 1
About the opportunity and eligibility
Presented by the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival with Alaska Geographic and the Denali Education Center, Composing in the Wilderness brings composers to Alaska to explore Denali National Park, write new chamber music and hear it premiered. Tentative dates are July 18–30, 2027. Stephen Lias leads the programme: participants spend days in the national park with scientific and naturalist guides, compose at the education centre, then work with professional players for performances in Fairbanks and Denali. Composers of all nationalities, ages and musical styles are encouraged to apply.
How to apply and work requirements
Prepare a statement explaining your creative goals and why the wilderness experience matters; two or three compositions with scores and recordings; a résumé, biography or CV; contact details for three references; a high-resolution headshot; and information on fitness, backcountry experience and necessary dietary or medical accommodations. The online application cannot be saved midway, so assemble all materials before starting. Participants draw an instrumental combination after arrival and develop a new chamber piece in roughly three dedicated composition days, followed by rehearsal, public performances and recording. Physical participation in remote outdoor activities is integral to the programme.
Deadline, costs, benefits and rights
Applications close November 1, 2026. The projected registration cost for accepted participants is US$2,950, including specified accommodation, in-programme transportation and most meals, with a 20% deposit due in December and the full balance by May 1, 2027. Flights to Alaska and any uncovered personal or meal expenses require separate budgeting. This is a paid residency rather than a cash-prize competition or fully funded fellowship.
