CBSO Project Remix 2027: Free Orchestral Opportunity for Ages 11–18, Apply by 8 November
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) is taking applications for Project Remix 2027, a free music-making opportunity for instrumentalists aged 11 to 18. The current call closes on Sunday 8 November 2026. Unlike an elite conservatoire audition, Project Remix is a non-auditioned orchestral project: young musicians apply for a limited place in an ensemble and develop their skills through rehearsals and a collective performance. The 2027 edition explores the rhythms and energy of music made for dancing, through bespoke symphonic arrangements.
Who is this project for?
CBSO indicates that participants should be approximately Grade 5 standard or above on their instrument. A formal examination certificate is not compulsory, so young musicians whose playing is at an equivalent standard can still consider applying. The programme is open to people aged 11–18, and the organisers select players based on the instrumentation needed for the orchestra after applications close. This means that being eligible does not guarantee a place, even though there is no competitive solo audition.
Cross-genre symphonic music and 2027 dance themes
Previous Project Remix editions have explored popular television themes, video games and Birmingham's musical cultures. For 2027, CBSO describes dance-inspired orchestral grooves and specially arranged music. Such repertoire can make the project interesting for young players who enjoy film, games and popular music but also want to learn the discipline of ensemble performance. It is not restricted to classical solo repertoire, although participants must be able to play an orchestral part at the level required by the organisers.
Cost and participation
The CBSO states that Project Remix is free of charge to participants. There is no need to purchase an audition package simply to be considered. However, free participation should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every family expense, travel journey or overnight stay is covered. Before accepting a place, parents and guardians should check the rehearsals, performance schedule, arrangements for supervision and any personal costs not described on the public programme page.
How the places are assigned
Because the orchestra needs a balanced combination of strings, woodwind, brass and percussion, places are limited by orchestration. Section Leaders allocate places after the application period. A good application should give an accurate account of the instrument played, experience in ensembles, general performance standard, and availability. Where an applicant plays more than one instrument, mention this only if it is relevant to the official application form and practical participation.
Preparing to apply
Applicants should use the current Project Remix 2027 application linked from the CBSO's young-people page, rather than an archived form from 2026. Families should verify the participant's age and rehearsal availability and keep the contact details for a parent or guardian ready if the submission form requests them. The organiser notes that formal exams are not mandatory, so a short and accurate description of playing experience is more useful than overstating qualifications.
