BYMT Musician Auditions 2027: Pit Bands and Stage Bands for Ages 11–21
British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT) is recruiting instrumentalists for its 2027 music-theatre activities, with in-person musician audition workshops advertised for Sunday 22 November 2026 in both Leeds and London. The scheme offers performers aged 11 to 21 a route into the pit band or an on-stage ensemble for original music-theatre projects. BYMT accepts musicians who play any instrument at approximately Grade 7 standard or above, without requiring a formal Grade 7 examination certificate. The musician audition is a separate process from the organisation's acting, singing and dancing performer auditions.
Who should consider a musician audition?
A pianist, guitarist, bass player, drummer, violinist, wind player or musician working across genres can consider the application if their playing is comfortably at the advertised level. BYMT's productions involve new music theatre, so listening, reading, adapting to a music director's guidance and collaborating with actors and singers are particularly useful. No prior musical-theatre experience is required. The age range is flexible at its boundaries: participants must have turned 11 by the start of their production and must not have turned 22 before that production finishes.
Two ways to be considered: £20 workshop or free musician pool
The in-person audition is a three-hour creative group workshop, led by professional music directors, costing £20 per participant. The site currently lists Leeds and London sessions on 22 November 2026. Musicians unable to attend can instead submit a free Musicians Pool application online, including a short personal introduction video and a self-tape playing their chosen instrument. These two routes have different costs: it would be incorrect to describe all BYMT auditions as free or apply the actor's £45 workshop fee to instrumentalists.
Prepare two short, contrasting pieces
At the in-person workshop each applicant is asked to prepare two contrasting examples from their repertoire, no longer than one minute each. They may also receive written music a few days ahead of the audition. During the session, participants work on music in small groups, play their prepared pieces, respond to suggestions and try some improvisation. This means that polished solo playing matters, but so do adaptability, pulse, clear communication and the ability to change approach in response to direction.
From workshop to an original professional-theatre production
After the workshop BYMT reviews the applicants and tries to match musicians to suitable productions. Successful participants may be offered a residential project, working with a professional creative team on a brand-new music-theatre work staged at a professional venue. The current FAQ contains carried-over text referring to the 2026 production season and to offers made by early April 2026, even though the bookings now clearly name 2027 auditions. Applicants should therefore confirm their actual 2027 production dates, selection notification and repertoire with the organisation rather than rely on last year's timeline.
Participation costs after a production offer
The £20 workshop or free online musician-pool entry is not necessarily the full cost of accepting a production offer. BYMT's general parent information explains that residential projects are subsidised but normally have course fees, and that bursaries and instalment plans are available for eligible families. The organisation's current information describes assistance of up to 95% of course fees for qualifying families. Before accepting, request the current production's complete fee schedule, meals and accommodation arrangements, travel requirements and the relevant bursary decision.
How to apply responsibly
Book the Leeds or London workshop through the official BYMT musician page, or use its Musicians Pool form if in-person attendance is difficult. Review the age cut-off, bring the instrument and necessary accessories, prepare two one-minute contrasting extracts and test any online video before sending it. If you play percussion or an instrument that is difficult to transport, ask the organiser about suitable facilities. The audition date is 22 November, but there is no universally published separate last booking date: places may fill and should be checked live.
