A Yorkshire wind band invites a new musical leader

Bradford Concert Band (BCB) is looking for a Musical Director to join it from January 2027. The registered charity was founded in 1975 and has spent more than fifty years sharing concert band music with audiences across Bradford, Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area. It has around thirty musicians and gives bandstand concerts, joint concerts, formal performances and seasonal events. This appointment is a practical, ongoing musical leadership role rather than a one-off conducting competition.

The band wants its next director to bring strong musicianship and new programming ideas without losing the friendly atmosphere that sustains an amateur ensemble. Applicants with experience in concert band or wind band repertoire are particularly relevant, because the instruments, balance and literature differ significantly from a choir or a string orchestra. The advert emphasises motivating musicians and making ambitious repertoire enjoyable for audiences.

Twice-weekly rehearsals in Baildon, near Bradford

Rehearsals currently take place at Baildon Hall Club, Hallfield Drive, Baildon, Shipley, BD17 6NH. The regular weekly pattern is Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. The group is actively exploring a move to larger, more accessible accommodation, so candidates should be able to cope with a change of local rehearsal location in the future.

The new Musical Director must lead rehearsals and public concerts and help members develop musical technique and confidence. For people already directing school ensembles or teaching woodwind and brass instruments, the Sunday requirement may be especially important when reviewing availability. This is a local, in-person vacancy; no remote conducting option, visa sponsorship or relocation allowance is promised by the notice.

Mixed abilities from Grade 5 through advanced players

BCB describes Grade 5 as its nominal entry level, while noting that some members perform well beyond Grade 8 and others are still gaining confidence. The director needs to choose scores that challenge the most experienced players but leave developing musicians supported and motivated. Programming might encompass established concert band classics, newer arrangements and collaborations with other groups where musically appropriate.

The employer specifically values clear communication, imaginative repertoire choices, reliability and an approachable personality. An applicant could prepare examples of how they would balance rehearsing intonation, rhythm, blend and phrasing across a mixed-ability wind band. Those are useful professional considerations rather than additional examination subjects formally prescribed by the advert.

An honorarium is payable; there is no published fixed salary

The band's recruitment announcement explicitly says an honorarium is payable. It does not give an annual salary, rate per rehearsal or amount per concert. Accordingly, candidates should not interpret the position as a full-time salaried job or assume that each of the two weekly sessions is separately paid at an advertised rate. Relevant details should be agreed before accepting the appointment.

Prospective directors can ask about the likely annual concert schedule, preparation time, cancellations, additional rehearsals and responsibility for selecting music. As the current venue may change, travel arrangements also deserve discussion. BCB is a charity-run community band, and the final scope of the commission and financial arrangement should be clarified with its committee.

Apply by Sunday 25 October; auditions start 5 November

Applications close on Sunday 25 October 2026 at 11:45 p.m. in the UK local time shown by Making Music. The band plans to start auditions from Thursday 5 November 2026 and hopes to appoint its director for January 2027. Interested conductors are instructed to email Barbara via the link supplied in the recruitment notice to ask questions or apply.

A concise expression of interest can outline experience conducting wind ensembles, leading mixed-ability musicians and designing engaging concert programmes. The advert does not impose a single mandatory audition piece or uniform application document format in its main description, so candidates should obtain further details directly from the organiser rather than invent extra requirements. The official band site is www.b-c-b.org.uk.
