Banff Summer Opera 2027: singers, conductors and stage directors—apply by 4 November
New opera creation and rehearsal in July 2027
Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity will run its Summer Opera training from July 5 to 31, 2027, with arrival the previous day. This programme recruits singers, conductors and stage directors interested in contemporary opera and developing new work. Rehearsals and workshops include material by composers Niloufar Nourbakhsh and Cecilia Livingston, voice and movement coaching, score preparation, collaborative interpretation, direction and public work-in-progress performances. It is open to eligible adults from Canada and abroad; the application deadline is November 4, 2026.
Professional portfolio depends on the participant's role
Singers are asked for contrasting audition recordings, including a contemporary English-language selection by a Canadian composer and another operatic aria. Conductors provide video showing their rehearsal leadership and performance in an operatic or vocal context. Stage directors submit a portfolio describing their concept and concrete responsibilities in recent productions, limited by the organiser's current page requirement. Applicants should not submit the singer materials when applying as a conductor or director, and must be able to attend the full programme period.
The scholarship reduces costs, but does not erase them
The published programme cost is CAD12,184.20 and the standard arts scholarship is CAD9,494.10, leaving CAD2,690.10 for most admitted participants under that formula. Application fees are CAD65, or CAD35 for eligible Indigenous applicants, paid without a refund. A limited number of special scholarships may offset more, but there is no universal grant covering flights or other personal spending. This is educational participation rather than paid opera employment.
Institutional history and safe preparation
Banff Centre is a long-running Canadian institution with formal opera training, residential arts programmes and rehearsal facilities. It also announces optional live singer audition locations, but those auditions do not imply that every candidate will be appointed to a full-time opera house.
