A planned €20,000 music development bursary—not yet open

The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon has announced the Music Bursary Award for Round 1 of 2027. Applications are scheduled to open on Tuesday 10 November 2026 and close on Thursday 17 December 2026 at 5:30 p.m. Irish local time. The advertised maximum is €20,000 per successful individual artist. As of the verification date, 19 October 2026, the new application round has not opened; musicians should prepare their proposal, then confirm the active 2027 guidance when the portal becomes available.

This is a development bursary to enable artistic research, experimentation and deeper engagement with a musician's practice. It is not an unrestricted prize paid to everyone making an application, a guaranteed touring contract, or a specialist jazz-only competition. The Arts Council's wider music brief covers diverse practices; the funding should be judged against the music-specific round rules when released.

The applicant is the musician, not a festival or company

The public funding summary identifies 'individual artist' as the applicant type. Groups, promoters and organisations planning to stage a series of performances should compare the appropriate organisational and project grant schemes rather than assuming they can obtain a personal bursary through a band leader's application. The 2027 programme's full eligibility tests will establish residency, evidence of professional artistic practice, other awards and legal obligations.

Musicians who have built a practice in Ireland should prepare a coherent account of their work and development aims, including how the bursary will deepen their artistic ability. The official page does not authorize describing the opportunity as worldwide open. Applicants without a relevant Irish artistic or residential connection should first check the Council's eligibility policy.

Planning the artistic work and budget

The funding is intended to offer artists time and resources to think, explore and develop. Potential development activity could include focused work with a specialist mentor, research into a new performance technique, artistic experimentation or a period of practice-based investigation. Such suggestions are examples of bursary-style activity, not an invented list of approved 2027 spending categories. The detailed rules and cost exclusions become authoritative with the 2027 guidelines.

Build a budget matched to the development goals, and explain why the proposed period is feasible. Avoid entering large recording, festival or marketing costs merely because the headline cap is €20,000. The public figure is a competitive maximum, not a fixed individual payment. An applicant should clarify the implications of concurrent funding and reports from any previous Arts Council awards.

Application timetable and necessary support materials

The Arts Council typically releases programme-specific templates and guidance shortly before the application window. Applicants can prepare a short artist biography, a selected audio/video portfolio, realistic development objectives, details of planned mentors or collaborators, project timing and estimated costs, then adapt these to the exact application form once it opens. Check whether links are accessible without passwords and whether artistic recordings have the necessary permissions.

The Council specifies 17 December 2026 at 17:30 for the deadline. Overseas musicians preparing a legitimate eligible application must convert from Ireland's winter time zone rather than using their home midnight. Early registration in the funding portal and checking confirmation receipts reduces technical risk at submission.

Organiser history and official application

The Arts Council is Ireland's national arts funding and development agency. Its music staff and programmes support a wide range of professional artistic practices, including individual development bursaries and other grant instruments. The Council publicly archives prior funding guidelines and publishes programme contacts, decision and application procedures, allowing applicants to verify that this is a formal public opportunity rather than a private broker's offer.
