via nova Weimar 2027: International Composition Competitions for Orchestra and Sacred Music
Germany’s via nova association invites composers internationally to enter its 2027 Weimar composition competitions, associated with the Weimarer Frühjahrstage contemporary-music festival on 10–13 June 2027. There are two different categories: an original orchestral piece for Jena Philharmonic and a sacred vocal work for tenor, cello and organ. These are genuine composition calls, not performance auditions.
The deadline is 30 January 2027 at 23:59 Central European Time (CET). An applicant may submit one score in each category. The total announced prize fund is at least €7,000 and may be divided among award recipients; it should not be interpreted as a single €7,000 first prize.
Orchestral entries last no more than eight minutes. The permitted orchestra comprises strings up to 6.4.4.3.2, woodwinds 2.2.2.2, brass 4.2.3.0, and up to two percussionists including timpani. Marimba, harp, piano, celesta and electronic music are not allowed. Scores exceeding the available instrumentation may not be performed.
The sacred category requires tenor voice, cello and organ together, with a setting of Psalm 103:1–13 from the 2017 Luther German translation. Duration must not exceed eight minutes. The organ writing must be practicable on the organs at Schloss Belvedere and Herderkirche in Weimar. The winning sacred work is scheduled for the church service on 13 June 2027.
Submit an anonymous score in PDF using a permanent download link, without a password, in an email to via_nova@web.de. Include applicant identity and contact details in a separate document rather than on the score; the link must stay accessible until at least 31 March 2027. The official call provides a postal alternative. There is no initial application charge stated; shortlisted finalists instead pay a €100 participation fee by 5 May 2027 and are expected to attend festival rehearsals and events.
