U.S. Army Band 2027 National Solo Trombone Competition: YouTube Entries Due 1 December
The U.S. Army Band's American Trombone Workshop (ATW) National Solo Competition is taking recorded entries for 2027. The competition is intended for students and young professional trombonists without full-time performing positions. Entrants submit a performance video through YouTube and the competition's online application, with a deadline of 1 December 2026.
Instruments, divisions and repertoire
The official 2027 notice distinguishes a tenor/alto trombone competition from a bass trombone competition. Each provides three divisions with their own prescribed repertoire. The tenor/alto repertoire includes works associated with Jean-Michel Defaye, Brahms and Leopold Mozart; the bass route includes works by Paul Hindemith, Thom Ritter George and Edward Gregson.
Applicants must choose the category and age division that apply to them. The organiser specifies different age limits for each division, and the full rules govern whether accompanying piano must be recorded. Read the printed music and edition requirements rather than relying on a programme assembled independently.
Submission format and recording quality
A YouTube performance link is required by the stated deadline. Use the official online form to register, and check whether all mandatory repertoire is represented. Original-quality audio and fully synchronized video are essential; excessively compressed sound, abrupt edits and inaccurate uploads may jeopardize evaluation.
The rules warn that recording controls such as automatic gain can distort dynamics. Candidates are advised to switch those features off where possible and to test the uploaded video before final submission. Piano accompaniment must be included where the repertoire demands it.
Who organises the award
The American Trombone Workshop is hosted by the U.S. Army Band, 'Pershing's Own'. Its national solo event has drawn students and developing professionals from outside the United States as well as domestically, and it is separate from the ITA competitions also scheduled for 2027.
The workshop is an educational and professional development setting for trombonists. Entry to its competition does not amount to an application for military employment.
Deadline and applicant checklist
The organiser requires YouTube recordings and the online form by 1 December 2026. Check division ages as measured by the date specified in the rules, full-time employment restrictions, media requirements and any applicable costs before entering.
Only the official application page should be used for final terms, repertoire updates or contact details. No specific award amount or financial support is promised here.
Official application and final checks
Details and deadlines can be updated by the organiser. Read the official rules and use only the official submission route before paying fees, sharing documents or submitting work. Information reviewed on 23 October 2026.
