Sound NSW International Touring Fund 2026/27: Up to A$30,000 Matched — Next Deadline 30 October
For an established New South Wales band planning a confirmed overseas tour, air travel and accommodation can be the main financial barrier. Sound NSW’s Touring and Travel Fund – International Touring is open to eligible artists and music businesses and can contribute up to A$30,000 towards those costs on a matched-funding basis. The next applicable application cutoff is Friday 30 October 2026 at 12:00 pm (midday), Sydney time. Later cutoffs are scheduled for 29 January and 30 April 2027; the official funding program remains open across these rounds.
Who can apply? Established contemporary acts based in NSW
The opportunity targets artists and acts with a demonstrated professional touring record, an existing audience in Australia and internationally, and a support team able to execute an export plan. An eligible recipient must be at least 18 years old and have lived in New South Wales for a minimum of 12 months. For a touring ensemble, at least half the touring party must also have lived in NSW for at least 12 months. This is not an unrestricted international prize for artists based anywhere in the world.
Applications may be submitted by the artist or act, or by an eligible music business on the artist’s behalf. Applicants need an active Australian Business Number (ABN) and a bank account in the ABN name, or an approved funds administrator. The music itself must be new and original contemporary music. The guidelines do not support cover-only groups, experimental sound art, contemporary classical or opera, choral ensembles, music theatre, or community music groups through this particular program.
A confirmed itinerary is mandatory: five gigs in five cities
The international tour must include at least five confirmed performances in five different cities. A plan to seek bookings at a later date is not equivalent to meeting this condition. Sound NSW asks for evidence of confirmed performances as part of the application, alongside an itinerary and realistic logistics. A single overseas festival, showcase meeting or one-country visit with no five-city run should not be assumed eligible.
For applications submitted by the 30 October 2026 noon cutoff, the government timetable gives Wednesday 25 November 2026 as the earliest eligible activity start date. This makes the scheme relevant to tours departing after that date, provided they meet all other conditions. Costs incurred before the advertised activity start date cannot be funded retrospectively.
What does 'up to A$30,000 matched' mean?
An applicant must contribute at least as much cash as the amount requested from Sound NSW. For example, a tour with A$40,000 of eligible travel and accommodation costs could request A$20,000 from the fund while demonstrating A$20,000 in eligible cash contributions. The full A$30,000 ceiling is not a guaranteed award, and successful applications may receive less than requested.
The official rules accept cash sources such as committed performance fees, projected ticket and merchandise revenue, personal income, industry contributions and some government or philanthropic grants as contributions, when properly documented. Applicants should read the individual fund rules for evidence requirements instead of treating informal estimates as secured money.
Travel and accommodation: eligible versus ineligible spending
Supported costs are tightly defined: flights, train and bus travel, car hire, petrol, tolls, airport transfers, travel insurance, visas, per diems and accommodation. Travel or lodging for necessary support personnel can also be considered, although the performing artists and act are prioritised. This is a travel subsidy, not a general album-release or marketing grant.
The fund does not pay artist performance fees, rehearsal costs, equipment purchases, promotional campaigns, industry event passes, domestic touring or an activity already funded through another NSW Government grant. Artists should not present a general tour budget as fully eligible when it includes those excluded costs. It is also important to distinguish the fund from Sound NSW’s separate Domestic Travel and International Professional Development program.
Selection criteria and required evidence
Three weighted criteria guide selection: artist experience (40%), career impact (30%) and viability (30%). Evidence of previous touring, established overseas relationships, audience engagement, realistic routes, tour promotional plans and the capacity to manage the activity is therefore central. Sound NSW also requires every musician involved in publicly funded events to receive at least A$250 as a performance fee; applicants must demonstrate appropriate artist payments in their budget even though the grant cannot directly fund those fees.
The application checklist includes an artist biography, recent touring history, evidence of international audiences and partners, a detailed tour and career plan, a balanced project budget with evidence of matching funds, cost quotes, links to up to five minutes of original music, and confirmation of all five performances in separate cities. Preparing documents in advance is important because a missing confirmation or inadequate cash evidence can invalidate an otherwise promising application.
Submission dates and the online portal
Apply through Sound NSW’s SmartyGrants online system. The forthcoming cutoffs for this stream are 30 October 2026, 29 January 2027 and 30 April 2027, all at midday Sydney time. The administration expects to notify applicants within approximately four weeks of a round closing, although signed contracts and payments can take additional time. Funding is competitive, and approval is not automatic even when the entry passes eligibility checks.
Musicians deciding whether the 30 October round suits them should confirm that the first eligible tour activity does not precede 25 November. They should also check that a band’s NSW-resident members reach the 50% requirement, that the itinerary contains five distinct cities, and that their proposed grant does not exceed the verified matching contribution.
