Japan Philharmonic Horn (1st/3rd) Audition — Applications Due 13 November 2026
Overview
The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra is recruiting several horn players for 1st and 3rd positions. Applicants must have the ability to perform as orchestral musicians. There are no restrictions based on age, sex, or nationality, but successful candidates must be able to work in Japanese.
Selection process
The first-round audition is scheduled for 7 December 2026 at Suginami Public Hall in Tokyo. The date of the main audition will be announced later, followed by an interview. Successful candidates enter a four-month trial period before a vote by the orchestra members determines permanent appointment.
Audition repertoire
The main audition includes Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 in E-flat major, K.495, all movements with cadenza; Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op.11, all movements; and orchestral excerpts. Pitch is A=442 Hz, and applicants must bring their own pianist.
Deadline and conditions
Postal applications must arrive by Friday, 13 November 2026. Pay follows orchestra rules; the published example for entry at age 22 is JPY 212,000 per month. Regular raises, commuting, housing, family and education allowances, social insurance, retirement benefits and re-employment provisions apply. Retirement age is 63.
How to apply
Download the prescribed application form from the official website and submit it by post. Students must include a recommendation letter. Applicants studying or living overseas must provide a contact address in Japan because excerpts and results are sent by post. Audition expenses are borne by the applicant.
