Impulse New Music Festival 2026 – Composition Summer Program

mpulse New Music Festival (INMF)

Program Overview

A summer composition program for collegiate to early-career composers. Selected participants compose a new work for a Festival Chamber Trio or the ensemble-in-residence, Brightwork (Pierrot ensemble + percussion), culminating in a world premiere at the 2026 festival concert. A non-composing Study Program option is also available.


Festival Format & Dates

  • Online sessions: July 1–10, 2026

  • In-person residency: August 4–8, 2026

  • Location: The Colburn School Conservatory of Music, Los Angeles, USA

  • On-campus housing available

Program Components

  • Private lessons with composition faculty

  • Collaboration with professional musicians

  • Premieres with high-quality audio and video recordings

  • Masterclasses, workshops, and evening lectures

  • Composer Bootcamp

  • Conducting for Composers workshop

  • Talks on grant writing, commissions, and career development

Tuition

  • Full Summer Program: $2,450

  • Study Program: $950

  • Limited scholarships available

Eligibility

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Must be able to legally travel to and participate in live events in the United States starting August 2026

  • Personal statement

Recording Rights

  • Composers may use provided audio/video recordings for personal websites, portfolios, and academic or professional applications

  • Commercial release or monetization is not permitted without written consent from INMF
