Creative BC is accepting applications for Record in BC 2026/27, a commercial sound-recording grant designed to bring established musicians from elsewhere in Canada and internationally into British Columbia's studios. Applications remain open on a rolling basis until 30 October 2026 at 4:00pm Pacific Time, or until the available funding is exhausted. Successful applicants can receive between CAD $10,000 and $30,000, covering no more than 50% of eligible project expenses. The scheme differs from grants for emerging local B.C. performers: its intended beneficiaries are established acts from outside the province who collaborate with eligible local studios or producers.

Application deadline and limited funding

Creative BC opened applications on 5 August 2026. Its programme guidelines specify the final date as Friday 30 October at 4:00pm Pacific Time, with the important qualification that the call may close early if the total funding is committed. The overall programme budget is CAD $300,000. Reviews occur at the end of each month, with results communicated before the end of the following month. An application is considered competitively and does not secure funding simply because it arrives before the advertised final date.

Who is eligible? Artists must be based outside British Columbia

An eligible artist must live outside B.C. A band or other group must have more than half of its permanent members resident outside the province. A group divided evenly between B.C. and non-B.C. members is directed to the separate Career Development programme instead. Established musicians from another Canadian province and international acts may both qualify, provided they meet the remaining requirements and plan a recording project with B.C. recording professionals.

The programme looks for established professional careers and gives examples such as music-related revenue, substantial released recordings, touring history, media coverage, a professional team and a demonstrable fan audience. Earning CAD $30,000 a year from music-related activities is described as strongly recommended for a competitive application, not an absolute mandatory earnings threshold. Artists who are just beginning to write their first songs without professional commercial recording history should assess whether a different fund would be more suitable.

An artist's registered business or label must be the applicant

The lead applicant is the artist's music company or the artist's record label, acting in collaboration with a British Columbia producer or studio. A manager, producer or studio cannot independently apply as the grant recipient on behalf of an unrelated artist. The applicant business must operate in music, have a recognised legal form such as a registered sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation, hold a relevant business number or registration evidence, and have a financial stake in the recording through ownership or licensing. Where the applicant is a separate label, a signed artist-label agreement is required.

Record in B.C. for commercial release, not a songwriting retreat

The project must be an eligible sound recording intended for commercial release: singles, EPs and full-length albums of original compositions or interpretations of other works may be considered. Actual sessions must involve a B.C. recording business or producer meeting the organiser's criteria. Funding is intended to pay for recording-related activities, not songwriting commissions, pre-recording composition, early demos with no commercial release intention, standalone performance or touring. Projects must be completed and paid for within the eligible activity window, which runs from 5 August 2026 to 1 December 2027.

Applicants should identify the proposed B.C. recording studio or producer before applying and obtain a letter of intent from that collaborator. It is possible to bring a producer from elsewhere to work in a B.C. studio, but a project using a B.C.-based producer may receive greater competitive consideration. Not every studio appearing in a public search directory automatically meets eligibility requirements; the applicant is responsible for checking the recording business's lawful establishment, location and commercial recording activity.

Grant size: CAD $10,000–$30,000, up to half the budget

A successful application may be offered between CAD $10,000 and $30,000, subject to project size, programme availability and assessment. The award can cover at most 50% of eligible budgeted costs, so the recording budget must be at least CAD $20,000 to qualify. Recipients are expected to secure the remaining financing. In general, total combined public grant funding cannot exceed 75% of the project budget; the guidelines provide a special exception for Indigenous artists. All funding figures are Canadian dollars, not US dollars.

These are project grants, not cash prizes for merely sending an audio file. If a project is awarded support, the recipient must sign the funding agreement and pay an initial deposit to the named B.C. studio or producer, with proof, within 30 days. Canadian recipients may receive an initial advance of 75% of the grant after these conditions are met, while international recipients are paid their grant only after expenses have been paid and the final report, invoices and payment evidence have been approved. For an international label, this cash-flow difference is particularly important.

Which expenses can be covered?

Eligible expenses include B.C.-based recording, mixing and mastering, studio and equipment hire, producer fees, music arrangement fees and hired session musicians. Travel to B.C., local ground transportation, eligible accommodation and reasonable daily meal allowances during the recordings may also be considered. The guidelines set a maximum per diem of CAD $80 per day per person and an eligible B.C. accommodation ceiling of CAD $400 per room per night. Artwork may qualify if created in B.C. and otherwise meeting the programme conditions.

By contrast, costs of work done outside British Columbia, touring, marketing, music video production, demos not planned for commercial release, capital equipment purchases, ongoing rehearsal, management and grant-writing fees are excluded. The rules also list AI-generated creative content as ineligible. Any use of AI in developing the application or project must be disclosed, and underlying copyright and other rights remain the applicant's responsibility. Thus, a proposal made primarily to fund AI-generated recordings cannot safely be assumed eligible.

Documents to prepare before applying

The full application needs the online form, the programme budget in Creative BC's supplied template, a letter of intent from the B.C. producer or recording studio and the applicant's business registration or incorporation documentation. After submission, members of the act and the local studio or producer receive self-identification forms that must be returned within two weeks. Where a label rather than the artist applies, the signed label-artist agreement must accompany the submission. Evidence of additional financing and vendor quotes is recommended for relevant budgets.

Assessment and the financial commitment

Creative BC assesses the professional track record of the artist, the benefit to the B.C. recording industry, the label or supporting team, diversity and equity considerations and the realism of the proposed budget. Funding is competitive. Applicants can improve clarity by showing confirmed dates, a producer's commitment, commercially viable release plans and reasonable evidence of career history. Applicants are encouraged to speak with the programme team before investing in travel bookings.

This is an international-facing B.C. production programme, not an opportunity restricted to Canadian nationals: eligible established artists based outside B.C. can include musicians from overseas. But the requirement to apply through a registered business, collaborate with the province's recording sector, contribute matching funds and pay eligible expenses before final reimbursement may make it unsuitable for early-stage independent artists without established financing.
