CMS 2027 Original Music Call: Live Chamber Pieces and SATB Choir, January 5 Deadline
A live music call separate from the film-score screening
The College Music Society invites original musical works for live performance in the Composers' Concert Series during its 2027 National Conference. The deadline is 5 January 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time. Music from varied traditions, co-written works and music involving improvisation are eligible according to the organisers' instructions. This call is distinct from the Society's invitation to submit completed films and visual media, for which no live performers are provided. A composer should choose the correct form based on how the submitted work will be presented.
Existing ensembles or conference musicians
Proposers may bring an ensemble of their own to perform a work or request performers at the University of Colorado Boulder or University of Denver when the forces use standard instrumentation such as a string quartet or brass quintet. An additional special option concerns SATB choral music no longer than five minutes that responds directly to the theme of the conference. Because performer availability varies, highly unusual electronics, oversized ensembles and specialized instruments should be confirmed explicitly rather than regarded as automatically provided.
Score permissions and audience benefit
The proposal must present a coherent work and enough score, instrumentation and rehearsal information for festival curators to assess viability. The organiser's instructions govern anonymisation, media and performance logistics. Composers must retain or secure permission to use copyrighted components and arrange any performer-provided ensemble's travel themselves unless an individual agreement states otherwise. Acceptance should be described as a concert opportunity and professional exposure, not as an automatic commission fee or paid artist residency.
Institution and artistic aims
The College Music Society connects university faculty, students and music professionals through conferences and programming across the United States. Its composer concert series puts new compositions in front of educators, performers and prospective collaborators. Reviewing the conference's actual venue dates and current submission form helps authors assess whether they can attend if requested and whether their instrumentation matches the society's production resources.
Official application information and regulations
