CFMTA 2027 Canadian National Violin Competition: Provincial Nomination Required
National judged performance contest: eligibility for violinists
The Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations (CFMTA/FCAPM) has announced its 2027 National Multidiscipline Competition. Violinists may enter through the instrumental division, alongside competitors in other musical disciplines. This is a genuine judged national music competition, not an unpaid call to join an amateur orchestra or a teaching course. Eligibility is restricted to Canadian citizens or legal residents of Canada who study with a CFMTA member in good standing. Instrumental competitors must not have reached their 25th birthday on January 1, 2027; previous first-prize winners of a CFMTA national competition cannot re-enter. The national competition is therefore intended for musicians within Canada's musical education and performance community rather than unrestricted worldwide applications.
Provincial selection comes before national entry
An essential qualification is easy to overlook: entrants MUST first be chosen by a provincial or territorial member association. They cannot simply pay the fee and nominate themselves directly for the national event. Each provincial or territorial association may send no more than two participants, representing different disciplines. A violin student interested in this competition should immediately ask their local CFMTA-affiliated teacher or regional association about the selection date and method; the national registration deadline does not necessarily reflect the earlier regional qualifying deadline. The associations cover specified travel expenses according to the national reimbursement process, while hotel and meals depend on arrangements with the sponsoring provincial body.
Repertoire, registration fee and 2027 dates
The 2027 national application form is scheduled to open December 1, 2026, with an online deadline of March 1, 2027. The official regulations list a $250 application fee; confirm currency and exact payment options on the live form. Applicants need a digital photograph, a concise biography of 100–150 words, teacher and provincial representative contacts, and two distinct repertoire lists. The semifinal performance runs for 25–30 minutes and for instrumentalists includes at least one Canadian composition, a significant work from the Baroque or Classical era, and a balanced selection of shorter pieces. Three finalists must present a new 30–45-minute program, rather than repeat the semifinal pieces. The rules state that special prizes will be announced, but do not yet provide fixed 2027 cash amounts; do not rely on prizes from earlier editions.
Organiser and application verification
CFMTA is the Canadian national organisation of affiliated music-teacher associations and administers judged student performance events. Its competition office publishes the official 2027 rules and gives competitions@cfmta.org for questions. Before registering, confirm the correct provincial nomination path, age calculation, teacher membership, music scores for jurors, stage-time limits and any later amendment to the prize announcements.
